Abstract
748,459. Earth-excavating apparatus. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 5, 1954 [July 14, 1953, May 20, 1954], Nos. 19519/53 and 14793/54. Class 68(1) A ditch-digging machine comprises a mobile chassis 10 on which a frame 11 is pivotally mounted about a fore-and-aft axis 20 to extend laterally of the chassis from between the wheels on one side thereof. At the outer end of the frame 11 is a gear box 21 and to the output shaft of said gear' box, which is at an angle to the pivotal axis 20 of the frame, is secured a digging wheel 12. The digging wheel 12 comprises two conical members 33 secured to an annular flange 35 on the leading face of which are secured arcuate cutter knives 36 and deflector blades 37. The input shaft' of the gear box is driven from a laterally disposed power take off on the chassis through universal connections 26, 27 and a telescopic shaft 23, 24. The frame 11 is rotated about the axis 20 by an hydraulically-actuated jack 17 acting against a compression spring 16. A wheel or skid structure 30, 31, 32 supports the outer end of the frame when it is in the digging position. The Provisional Specifications describe also an automatic depth regulating device for the digging wheel and the provision of cutters and deflector blades on the rearward face of the annular flange 35.
