Abstract
748,243. Fuel-injection pumps. C.A.V., Ltd. Dec. 3, 1954 [Dec. 23, 1953], No. 35715/53. Class 102(1). In a fuel-injection pump, the pumping chamber g of the, or each, cylinder a is connected to a chamber h in which slides a piston j, the rear face of which is exposed to the pressure of the fuel in a passage i leading to the inlet passage to the pump ; the passage i is controlled by a valve n. When the valve n is open, the piston reciprocates freely to an extent limited by the shoulder k and an adjustable stop k<SP>1</SP> but when the valve n is closed the reciprocation ceases and extra fuel is delivered by the pump. As shown in Fig. 3, the valve is opened by the pressure in the inlet acting on a piston m<SP>1</SP> loaded by a spring p ; the valve may be actuated manually. A throttling restriction may be provided in the passage i and the valve may have a shaped end to effect a variable throttling of the passage after opening. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement in which a pair of radially opposed pistons v are actuated by a cam wand carried in a rotor t that distributes fuel to several outlets 7.. The piston j is mounted in the rotor t and is controlled by the valve n arranged in the outlet of the feed pump x.
