Class 40(2) In a dictating machine, automatic marking apparatus is provided for applying distinctive marks on a pad of slips to indicate instructions, "end of letter" indications, and the like. The embodiment described shows the pad 12 of slips carried on a tray 18 which, when an indication mark is to be made, is lifted from the normal position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 5, to one of two higher positions, so that a marker roller 93 makes a line on the pad 12, the length of the mark being related to the nature of the instruction, and the longitudinal position being related to the position of the transducer 24, Fig. 1. The short mark may, for instance, indicate that a correction is to be made, while a long mark may indicate the end of a letter. The lifting of the tray is effected by means of electromagnets 30, 32. The magnet 30 is a rotatory one and when its circuit is closed by a press switch 106, the resulting rotatory motion is restricted by an arm 38, Fig. 4, which intercepts an arm 40 movable with the tray 18, and thus causes only a short mark to be made. Current passes through the magnet 30 only of sufficient duration to discharge a condenser 126, after which the tray 18 is returned to its normal position under the influence of a spring 80. If a long mark is to be made a press switch 104 is moved downwardly to discharge a condenser 127 through magnet 32 which draws the arm 38, forming part of a bellcrank 59, out of the path of the arm 40. The operation of this magnet closes ccntacts 42, 44 in the circuit of magnet 30, whereby a long mark is made on the pad 12. Specification 742,490 [Group XXXIX] is referred to.
