Abstract

747,940. Glass manufacture. CORNING GLASS WORKS. June 4, 1954, No. 16654/54. Class 56 A method of making a glass blank from which thermometer tubing can be drawn, comprises forming a cylindrical segment 20, Fig. 3, of the blank from molten clear glass, placing a bore-forming mandrel 9 on the flat surface of the segment'along its longitudinal centre, surrounding only part of the exposed portion of. the mandrel with a hard core 8 of the red or other colour-constrasting glass, spreading a layer of white or opaque molten glass 23 over the core and over the remaining exposed portions of the mandrel, and then forming the remaining segment of the blank about the glass 23. The blank is formed in a two section cylindrically shaped mould. After forming part of the blank in the mould section 11 using a core 8 in the form of a crescent which is clamped to the top side of the mandrel 9, the other section of the mould is used to form the clear glass portion 26, Fig. 2 of the blank. White or opaque glass 27 may be applied to the blank and a layer of clear glass 28 added after removal from the mould. Blanks may be formed having cross-sections which are not cylindrical. U.S.A.
