Abstract

[Also in Group XXV] In a spring door-closer with a hydraulic check cylinder, the latter has an exhaust passage in its end within which a valve spindle reciprocates with the check plunger, there being clearance between the valve spindle and the wall of the passage for the expulsion of fluid by the plunger; the movement of the spindle in the passage keeps the latter clear of dirt. The valve spindle may be of varying cross-section to give different checking action at different positions of the door. The embodiment shown is a double-acting floor spring in which two compression springs 13 bear on a member 32 by adjustable abutment members and on a bridge-piece 10 engaged by a pair of cam pins 11 forming part of a door pivot of which the lower end bears on a pin 8 in the base of the housing 1 and the upper is squared to fit in a socket 6 in the heel of the door, an upper bearing being provided by a cover member 2; members 3, 4 cover the rest of the housing. A cam 19 forming part of the door pivot engages a roller 18 on the check plunger 15, which slides in the cylinder 20 and is guided by a flat part 16 engaging the bottom of the housing 1 being held against the cam by a spring 25. The cylinder 20 has a stem 34 adjustably fixed in a notch in the member 32 by nuts 35 and axially bored for the passage of a valve spindle 21 which moves with the plunger 15, the spindle having a head 22 retained in a bore in the plunger and formed with flats to allow oil to flow past it. Oil is drawn into the cylinder from the housing through a port 26 and ball valve 28 in the plunger 15, and is expelled through the bore. in the stem 34, the spindle 21 having a tapered flat to provide clearance for the oil and to give a progressive checking action; the clearance may alternatively be provided by a straight or helical groove, of constant or varying section, or by making the spindle a tapered needle. The member 32 is adjustable laterally of the housing 1 to enable the closed position of the door to be adjusted.
