Abstract
The process of reducing the sulphur and silicon contents of pig iron according to the parent Specification is modified by replacing all or part of the reducible oxides by oxygen or a gas or gases containing available oxygen. The gas may be oxygen, air, or air enriched with oxygen, with or without the addition of carbon dioxide or water vapour. The final temperature of the pig iron may be regulated by adjusting the composition of the gas and/or by adjusting the proportions of gas and reducible oxides. It is stated that if the oxidising constitutents are adjusted to remove only the silicon and to produce a desulphurising slag, the remaining constitutents of the pig iron, e.g. carbon, manganese, and phosphorus are unaltered.
