Abstract
746,606. Valves. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Jan. 8, 1954 [Jan. 9, 1953], No. 605/54. Class 135. A valve comprises a casing 25 containing first and second relatively slidable members having contact faces pressed together, e.g. the rotary disc valve 31 secured to its spindle 36, and its seat 30 respectively ; means supporting the valve 31 against movement away from the seat, e.g. the casing coverplate 26 and the ballbearing 34; a casing inner face 33, Fig. 7, at the back of the seat; a fluid passage terminating in a port in both valve and seat faces, e.g. 65, 64, in member 31 and 44 in member 30; a pressure chamber 82 for developing thrust, e.g. through a piston 84 and the face 33 for urging the seat against the valve and having a duct 87 connecting to the seat face in the path of the valve port but spaced from the seat port, e.g. via groove 88, so that fluid flows from the seat port to the pressure chamber only by leakage between the faces when the ports are out of register; the leakage path is shortened by overlap of the valve port with the groove during approach of the ports; the pressure chamber is directly connected to both ports when the valve port overlaps both groove and seat port as shown in Fig. 9; and the leakage path increases in length as the valve port moves over the seat port. Thus the increase, when the ports overlap, in the force tending to separate the discs is reduced and a substantially constant sealing pressure between the discs is maintained in all positions of the ports. When the ports align, or are out of alignment as in Fig. 2, inlet pressure at 20 acts behind a sealing ring 50 around a tube 49 welded to the member 30 and behind a resilient sealing flange 56 on the member 30 so that the leakage pressure between the faces tending to separate them is overcome. At the same time four pressure chambers of which only two, 80, 82, Fig. 7, are shown, are exhausted to outlet 21 via bleed grooves 89 intersecting the grooves 88 and around the unsealed outlet port 43 at 29. Valve 31 has four ports; 60, 61 connected by passage 62, and 63, 64 connected by passage 65; while seat 30 has inlet and exhaust ports 44, 43 and two ports 45, 46 connected to either side of a double-acting fluid motor.
