Abstract

Gas-expanded synthetic rubber is prepared by incorporating in a vulcanizable synthetic rubber mixture, azodicarbonamide and an amount of a glycol or glycerol equal to onetwentieth of the weight of natural or synthetic rubber, and heating the mixture to decompose the aziodicarbonamide to expand the mixture by evolution of gas and to vulcanize the expanded mixture. Specified synthetic rubbers are butadiene-styrene or acrylonitrile copolymers, butyl rubber and neoprene. The glycol may be ethylene, propylene, diethylene, triethylene, or tetramethylene glycol. Synthetic resins such as butadiene-styrene resinous copolymer and coumarone-indene resin may also be present.ALSO:Gas-expanded natural or synthetic rubber is prepared by incorporating in a vulcanizable natural or synthetic rubber mixture, azodicarbonamide and an amount of a glycol or glycerol equal to one twentieth of the weight of natural or synthetic rubber, and heating the mixture to decompose the azodicarbonamide to expand the mixture by evolution of gas and to vulcanize the expanded mixture. The glycol may consist of ethylene, propylene, diethylene, triethylene, or tetramethylene glycol, and the synthetic rubber may be of any known vulcanizable kind.
