Abstract

746,375. Retreading tyres. CHANNEL ISLANDS TYRE CO., Ltd. April 6, 1954 [April 9, 1953; Oct. 30, 1953], Nos. 9707/53 and 30074/53. Class 144 (2). In retreading a tyre by bonding a prevulcanized tread band 5 to the worn surface of a tyre by means of a cold-setting adhesive, a flexible impermeable membrane 10 is positioned around the tyre 2, when the tread band 5 is cemented thereon, to enclose the tread band and form a seal with the tyre sidewalls, pressure then being applied to the membrane to exert curing pressure on the bond between the tyre and the tread. As shown, the membrane may comprise a circumferentially split tyre inner tube fitted with a valve 11 to provide for exhausting of any entrapped air between the tread band, and the membrane 10 and tyre casing surface 1 respectively. To facilitate such air evacuation, the tread band may be provided with radial holes 7 in its groove bases and a series of channels on its underside connecting with the holes, and a strip of porous sacking is positioned between the membrane 10 and the tread band 5. To assist fitting of the tread band to the tyre surface 1 without entrapping air, a strip of glazed fabric may be placed around the cemented surface of the tyre prior to the application of the tread band, the glazed strip being subsequently withdrawn sideways from between the tyre and tread to allow gradual contact therebetween. Pressure is applied to the retreaded tyre and membrane assembly by placing the assembly in a container and subjecting it to fluid pressure. The one-piece tread band 5 may alternatively comprise a series of inter-engaging rings bonded side-by-side to the tyre. Specification 744,827 is referred to.
