Abstract

Hair and other keratinous materials are dyed by the aerobic oxidation thereon of 2.4.5-trihydroxy toluene in the presence of one or more primary aliphatic or arylaliphatic amines or salts thereof at a pH of 5-12, preferably, 7-11, and in the absence of sulphites, hydrosulphites and aliphatic mercaptans. An aqueous solution of the two components at the required pH may be applied to the hair followed by exposure to the atmosphere for a short time and then rinsing. Alternatively, a solution of the trihydroxy compound may be applied first, followed by a solution of the amine. The pH of the solution on the hair may be adjusted to the required value by application of a dilute solution of an alkali or alkaline buffer. Specified amines are methylamine, ethylamine, n-butyl-amine, allylamine, cyclohexylamine and benzylamine. The trihydroxy toluene may be employed in admixture with 1.2.4-trihydroxy benzene. To ensure storage stability, the solution containing the trihydroxy toluene and the amine should be protected from access to oxygen and its pH may be reduced to below 5. Examples are given of the dyeing of hair and, in one case, of the dyeing of wool. Specification 745,532 is referred to.
