Abstract
745,427. Continuous - casting machines. BRENNAN, J. B. March 31,1952, No. 8142/52. Class 83 (1). A method of continuously casting metal consists in passing the molten metal into a die 9, and in heating the metal contacting the die by induction, to maintain the surface of the metal molten or plastic until it reaches the end of the die. A constant level of metal is maintained in a crucible 1 enclosed in a helium-gas atmosphere in a dome 4 which may be water cooled. The copper tube or strip 13 passes through the die 9, which may run from the top or side of the crucible 1, and is solidified by floating rolls 11 or cooling jets 12. The rolls serve only for chilling but further rolls for forming may be provided. Alternatively, the strip may be fed onto a moving belt or roll. The exit velocity of the strip may vary between a few inches and 1000 ft/min.
