Abstract
744,896. Nonconducting coverings for heat and sound. BREMNER, F. E., and HAY, D. Jan. 12, 1953 [Jan. 12, 1952], No. 999/52. Class 64(2). A structure 4 to be insulated, such as a bulkhead or deck, first receives a continuous film of adhesive and then a layer of fibrous resilient unimpregnated material 1 to which, finally, is fastened, e.g. by adhesive, flexible sheet backing 2 impervious to air. Layers of the fibrous material 1 may be arranged side by side and each may have its own backing sheet 2 or the backing may be applied to the aggregate layer as one sheet or several sheets. The edges of separate sheets are covered by overlap 7 of adjacent sheets or by strips 5 of backing secured by sticking, sewing or both. Separate insulation may be applied to projections such as brackets 3 if these project through openings in the main insulation. Other insulation, which air may penetrate, may be placed against the backing sheet 2. The Provisional Specification describes a glass wool layer made rigid by a covering before the application of a backing layer and also insulation and backing attached to one another before application to a structure. Such attachment could be at points or lines for an effect like quilting.
