Abstract

744,580. Hinges. SEBY, C. J. Dec. 31, 1953 [May 7, 1953], No. 36376/53. Class 65 (2). A hinge comprises a leaf 1 having an inner edge portion 2 formed as an arc subtending an angle of more than 180 degrees and the mouth of which opens to one side of the leaf, another leaf 7 having an inner edge portion 8 with a cylindrical contour which is retained with a close sliding fit within portion 2, a stop portion 12 which extends into the mouth of the arc, the ends 3 and 4 of the latter being so arranged that abutment of the stop portion therewith determines the extreme relative positions of the leaves, in one of which the latter point in opposite directions and in the other of which they lie substantially at right angles, and a portion 10 which is directed from the outer edge of the stop portion so as to form with part of portion 8 a recess for accommodating one end of portion 2 when the leaves are moved to one of the extreme positions. Portion 8 is slotted longitudinally and presses elastically against the inner surface of portion 2. Leaf 1 is formed with flanges 5, 6 adapted to embrace a plate member to which the hinge is attached. Hinges as described may be used to connect together the sides and bottom of a collapsible box, the sides folding inward to lie one over the other; the sides may be integral with leaves 7, and leaves 1 at opposite ends of the box will be of different heights.
