Abstract
744,196. Silencers for exhaust gases. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Oct. 14, 1954 [Aug. 12, 1953]. No. 22282/53. Class 7(2) [Also in Group XXVI] - A conduit 10; e.g, the jet pipe of a jet propulsion engine, through which the high velocity gas flow is of a non-pulsating nature, has an outlet portion 13 of which the periphery increases from the inlet towards the outlet end, and the - crosssectional area in a plane 'normal to the mean direction of the gas flow either remains constant or decreases immediately or after an initial constant portion to provide a throat having a cross-sectional area less than that of the inlet end of the portion 13. The outlet end may be rectangular, oval or elliptical, and there may be a further section of' increasing crosssectional area downstream of the throat thereby providing a convergent-divergent nozzle. As shown, the portion 13 changes gradually from circular cross-section at the inlet end to a rectangular cross-section at the outlet end, the length of the rectangular section being 3. 6 or 10 times the width; the sides of the rectangular end are inclined inwardly as at 14 and that end is divided by struts 15 of trapezoidal form into six apertures 18, square in cross-section. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the walls of the apertures 18 are frusto-conical giving rise to corrugations in the portion 13.
