A lining machine comprises a base having a rotatable table on which is placed the article to be lined, a pillar adjustably mounted on the base, a main arm or bar freely mounted on a pivot adjustable on the pillar, a drop bar or instrument holding.member adjustably and rotatably mounted on the arm or bar and adapted to carry a crayon or cutting instrument whereby it can be brought to the surface of the article to mark or cut it; spring means to hold the crayon or cutting instrument against the surface of the article and sliding dogs for positioning the crayon or cutting instrument. As shown in Fig. 1 an article 3 to be lined is placed on a rotatable table 2, mounted on a base 1. An upright 6 is adjustably bolted in a slot in the base and has a sleeve 10 which can be clamped to the upright and has pivoted to the. sleeve a bar 15. A pair of bars 32 are pivoted to a height adjuster 28 on the bar 15; 31 one bar carries a holding dog 42 and the other carries adjustable dogs 45, 46, which are spaced apart the required distance. The top of the upright 6 is forked and has a sloping base and a knife edge; a dog is moved up this base to engage with the knife edge and adjust the angle of the bar 15. A crayon or cutting instrument is mounted on a bar 22 which is clamped to the bar 15 so that it can rock in a vertical plane parallel to the bar. A spring 26 connects the bar 22 to the clamp 10 to urge the crayon or cutting instrument to contact Alternatively for adjusting the angle of the bar 15 and hence the height of the crayon or cutting instrument pivoted arms carrying dogs are mounted on a member clamped to the upright 6 and the bar 15 has an extension which engages a selected dog or the arms are pivotally mounted on the bar 15 and carry the dogs the selected dog engaging a projection on a member clamped to the bar 15. Alternatively a tubular member 67, Fig. 17, has spaced slots 71 in which are adjustably mounted dogs 72 and an inner tube 68, carrying the crayon or cutting instrument, is guided by rollers 69, 70. The tube 68 has apertures 75, in line with the slots 71, in which are pivoted toggles 76 which have bifurcated ends engaging collars on a rod 79. A finger lever 81 at the bottom is depressed to raise the rod to disengage the toggle engaging a dog and so allow adjustment of the height of the tube 68. The holder 87, Fig. 21, for the crayon has an extension 88 and a lug 89. A rod 90 carrying a blade 98 is mounted in holes therein and has an arcuate member 93 with lateral ears and two depressions into one of which a ball passes as the rod is rotated. The base has two superimposed interconnected apertures; the lower one houses the crayon and the other has a spring urged rod 103 carrying a crayon presser 102. By rotating the rod 90 the blade 98 is rotated to allow the crayon to extend. The rod can be withdrawn by a handle 106 and roller 112 is adjustably mounted on the base. The holder is mounted in a clamp on the bar 22.
