A self-aligning tool-holder comprises an assembly of three members 3, 8, 16 in general axial alignment, member 16 carrying a drill chuck 19 or a socket for a drill, reamer, tap, &c. and member 3 being fixed to driving-shaft 4. Member 8 has two pairs of pins 9, 13 on diameters at right-angles to each other, and engaging slots 11, 14 respectively, in members 3, 16. The members are contained in a housing 2 screwed to a member 3 and locked thereto by disc 6 and screws 7. Rollers 23, 24 in cages having straight grooves, are provided between the members, and a ball-race 26 between member 16 and the bottom of the housing. A chuck &c. supporting spindle 17 extends with clearance through a bore 18 in the end of the housing and carries a cup-shaped ring 27 capable of engaging the outer periphery of housing 2 to hold spindle 17 in alignment with shaft 4. The ring may be held in this position by a spring-pressed ball 29 but is movable downwards against a spring ring 32 to allow the tool to float laterally. In use in a drilling- machine, with parts 4, 17 in axial alignment, work having a pilot-hole &c. is positioned in approximate alignment with the drill. The ring 27 is then moved out of contact with housing 2 to allow the drill to float and align itself accurately with the axis of the hole. When used horizontally to hold a drill &c. in a lathe, a clamp 33 on the housing supports the drill through a spring-pressed plunger 34. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), spindle 17 has a socket to hold the tapered shank of a tool, and extends both out of the housing and also upwardly in the housing, passing through member 8 and terminating in a domed recess formed in member 3. Slots in the side of the dome allow access for a drift to remove the drill &c., the slots being closable by pivoted covers which carry a member for supporting the upward extension of spindle 17 when the drift is used.
