Abstract

742,347. Purifying water in takes and watercourses. UNION RHEINISCHE BRAUNKOHLEN KRAFTSTOFF AKT. - GES., KRIEGBAUM, O., and DIEM, A. Dec. 8, 1953 [Dec. 10, 1952], No. 34155/53. Class 46. The water of lakes, rivers &c. is aerated by introducing air in very fine distribution through one or more aerators arranged near the surface of the water. Water to be treated is drawn from the lower depths of the lake, where contamination is most prevalent, through pipes 2 into a container 7 provided with aerators 8 and supported by a boat or ship 1 which may be self-propelled, the treated water, being discharged through an outlet pipe 13. As shown, the pipes 2, 13 pass through the sides of the ship 1, but they may be led over the sides thereof, the level of the water in the container 7 being kept above that of the lake &c. to permit treated water to be siphoned from the container 7. The pipes 2, 13 are lowered to the desired depth by cranes 3, 14 and a pump 5 ensures adequate circulation. The pipes may be flexible and the pump be at the lower end of the inlet-pipe. In modifications, the pipes are telescopic and pass vertically downwards through the hull of the ship or the flow of a river urges water through a funnel-shaped mouthpiece in the side of the ship into the container 7 and the treated water is piped to the desired depth. A container 7 may be suspended between two ships or the aerators 8 be attached to the undersides of the ship.
