Abstract
In a process for preparing a calcium carbide composition of improved meltability and azotability using a mixture of lime and carbon or coke in an electric furnace, calcium fluoride in granulated form in an amount 1.5-3.5 per cent of the carbide-forming mixture is added, and the mixture melted. The calcium fluoride granules of size 3-15 mm. may, preferably, be interposed in spaced layers in the carbide-forming mixture. The resulting calcium carbide composition may be readily converted to calcium cyanamide by nitrogenization with nitrogen gas, without further addition.
