A measuring device for lathes comprises a body D fixed to the saddle and containing a shaft C driven by a gear A meshing with the lead-screw or rack, which shaft carries a graduated dial E having teeth meshing with a compound gear J which drives a graduated dial K. The dials are protected by a shroud F and transparent cover M and, as shown, one revolution of dial E corresponds to six of dial K. With the lead-screw stationary, the device, measures travel of the saddle, and when the screw is rotated during screw-cutting, the device functions as a thread indicator.
