Abstract
In a process of smelting ores containing lead and zinc in a blast furnace the air blast and at least part of the charge are preheated to maintain the temperature at the top of the furnace at a high level, say 700-900 DEG C., the charge composition is controlled to give a reducing atmosphere in the offtake vapours which contain the zinc, and the metals therein are condensed in metallic form. To ensure a reducing atmosphere the proportion of coke used is increased above the normal. To ensure elimination of zinc from the ore air is fed into the furnace at intermediate levels as well as the bottom of the furnace. In treatment of sulphide ores these are roasted by a sintering process, mixed with fluxes such as lime and silica, and preheated to 500-750 DEG C. The coke may be separately preheated to 800-1000 DEG C. and the air blast to 550-800 DEG C. The lead recovered at the bottom of the furnace will contain nearly all the silver and gold, and some of the tin, antimony and bismuth contained in the ore. Copper will also be collected with the lead in metallic form or, in the presence of sufficient sulphur, as a matte.
