740,823. Toothed gearing. YOUNG, S. G. Jan. 15, 1954 [Jan. 16, 1953], No. 1399/53. Class 80(1) In a gear mechanism wherein a worm drives a rack through an intermediate worm wheel, the wheel comprises a straight-toothed spur gear 5 which is inclined to the axis of the worm 4 by an angle a equal to the lead of the worm, and the rack (not shown), which is parallel to the worm axis, has teeth which are inclined to the rack axis by (90 Œ #) degrees so as to mesh with the wheel 5. The end faces of the wheel 5 may be cut to form a convex cone continuously providing a surface parallel to the worm axis so that the end thrust on the wheel may be absorbed by a side wall or by a thrust block or bearing.
