Abstract

740,732. Flexible tubes. COMPOFLEX CO., Ltd., and MOSELEY, J. Oct. 5, 1954 [Oct. 12, 1953], No. 27978/53. Class 99(2). At least two superposed helically wound layers of supported and sufficiently plasticized polyvinyl chloride, i.e. fabric having calendered on each side thereof a layer of plasticized polyvinyl chloride containing 40 per cent by weight of plasticizer, are bonded together without intervening adhesive and by subjection of the tube to pressure under steam heat. The fabric may be of cotton, or fabric woven from synthetic fibres such as nylon or rayon, or those known under the Registered Trade Marks " Thermovyl " or " Terylene." The polyvinyl chloride may be that known as " Corvic PM " " Geon 120 or "Geon 121 " (Registered Trade Marks), and the plasticizers may be tetrachlorphenol, dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, polypropenyl sebacate, polypropylene sebacate, polypropylene adipate, " Hycar " (Registered Trade Mark), tricreysl phosphate or mixtures of these materials. In the construction shown, a helical winding of autstenitic, stainless steel wire 3 is applied over helically wound layers 1, 2 of, respectively, unsupported and supported polyvinyl chloride and there are two helical layers 4, 5 of unsupported polyvinyl chloride and two helical layers 6, 7 of supported polyvinyl chloride, all the layers being wound with a small overlap, and successive layers being optionally wound in opposite directions. The outer surface of the tube is corrugated by helically wrapping a layer of canvas, rubberised with vulcanised natural rubber, over the tube and applying a wire helix the convolutions of which are disposed between those of the wire 3. A water saturated cloth is wrapped around the outer helix and the assembly is subject to steam at 60 lbs. per sq. in. for ¥ hour, after which the cloth, outer helix and canvas are removed to leave external corrugations 8, the helix 3 becoming embedded in the layers 4, 5. The tube may consist of plies of supported polyvinyl chloride, and be corrugated both internally and externally.
