Abstract
739,717. Discharging vertical retorts. NATIONAL CARBONISING CO., Ltd. Sept. 15, 1953 [Sept. 15, 1952], No. 23127/52. Class 51 (2). A vertical retort 10 for carbonization by direct internal heating with a gas /air mixture as described in Specification 469,607 is closed by a bottom grate 18, comprising a casing 28 formed at the top with an annular grating 30 on which rests a pyramidal flanged grating 32, the said grate 18 being lowered on completion of the carbonization process by a hydraulic jack 44, whereby the coke is discharged onto a bench 50 and received by a conveyer 52. The grating 32 is built of triangular flanged panels bolted to the annulus 30, each panel being formed with slots 56 to provide gas passages, and preferably being made of heat-resisting cast iron. The grate is sealed to the retort during use by screw clamps 36 pivoted at 38 to lugs 40 on the retort wall, and the grate floor 33 slopes to a gas offtake 20 connected to a wash box 22. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the annulus 30 is dispensed with and the grating comprises a conical framework covered by firebrick or other refractory material with a cap of heat-resisting cast iron. The pyramidal or conical grating occupies a volume up to <SP>3</SP>/ 16 that of the retort, i.e. substantially that occupied by uncarbonized material when maximum carbonizing temperature is reached at grate level using a flat grate.
