The high voltage generating equipment for an electrostatic precipitator operable at elevated pressures and temperatures is housed in a chamber 26 communicating with the precipitator chamber 10 through a conduit 28, an insulator 29 through which the high voltage conductor 20<SP>1</SP> extends, being provided with an opening or openings permitting balancing of the pressures in the two chambers. The chamber 26 contains inert gas under a pressure equal to or maintained slightly above or below the pressure in the precipitator chamber 10. The high voltage generating equipment includes a transformer and rectifiers within an oilfilled casing 24. A pressure responsive regulator 60 controls an electrically-actuated valve in the inlet 58 for the inert gas. A pressure actuated switch 70 opens the primary circuit of the transformer if the pressure in the chamber 26 falls below a given limit. The temperature in the chamber 26 is regulated by a pipe coil 54. A filter pad e.g. of glass wool or porous ceramic material is provided at one or each end of the insulator. The operating pressure of the precipitator may be above 400 1bs. and up to 1000 lbs. per square inch, and the operating temperature up to 1000‹ F.
