Abstract

739,485. Filters. JONES, H. A. June 16, 1953 [June 16, 1952; Jan. 20, 1953], Nos. 15106/52 and 1602/53. Class 46. A coupling member for a filter assembly is adapted at its ends to be connected to the respective mouths of two containers, the connecting parts of the ends being identical, there being an internal apertured wall between the ends forming an abutment for the container mouths when connected, and an axially-extending portion between the aperture or apertures in the wall and the adjacent connecting part of the coupling. In the form shown in Fig. 2 a coupling member 21 having a knurled portion 10 is interiorly threaded at each end for connection with a bottle 1 for receiving the filtrate and a bottle 2 which in use contains the liquid to be filtered. On assembly a Seitz filter pad 9 is interposed between the bottle 2 and an apertured dividing wall 12 of the coupling, the filtrate being prevented from reaching the outer wall of the bottle or coupling by a tube 14. The tube 14 may be open at the top and have a bottom portion provided with the holes 13; in that case the wall of the tube may be inclined upwards and outwards to enable a larger area of the filter pad 9 to be used, Fig. 5. The pad may be supported by a disc of fine wire gauze or, as shown in Fig. 5, the pad may be domed to resist collapse and a packing ring 16 of triangular section provided. In Fig. 6 a thin membrane filter disc 17 can be used without its being distorted by the twist of the bottle in screwing the parts together since a tongued metal ring 18 engaging with a slot 19 in an end 4 of the coupling member 21 is inserted between the disc and the bottle 2. The coupling member may have external lugs or pivot pins to engage corresponding parts in a centrifuge. In use the coupling member is screwed onto an empty specimen bottle and the assembly sterilized in an autoclave. The sterile unit is then screwed onto the bottle containing liquid to be filtered and the whole put into a centrifuge so that the empty bottle will swing outwards during centrifuging and receive the filtrate.
