Abstract

<PICT:0739359/III/1> <PICT:0739359/III/2> <PICT:0739359/III/3> A grid tray for a contact column 10 containing a vertical series of spaced trays comprises a number of separate grid bars 16, upper and lower clamp rings 21, 17 and a number of supporting posts 25 depending vertically from the tray. The bars, e.g. of cast metal, ceramic material or carbon, are spaced from one another by lateral enlargements to provide slots 18 which form the only openings for gas upflow and downflow of catalyst particles suspended in gas and may narrow upwardly; separate spacer blocks may be substituted for the enlargements. The upper clamp ring 21 is in four sections each retained at the ends by U-shaped clamps 22, 23 secured by screws and lock nuts 24. The lower ring 17 is notched to accommodate two clamps and an intervening post which has a notch 25a to receive the clamp rings and bars. The top of the post has a face 25d on which a post of the tray nest above rests, a side flange 25e and a locking lug 25f the side opposite to flange 25e fitting against a lug 21b upstanding from the upper ring section. To close the space between the tray and column flexible sealing material 26 is clamped as between the unnotched portions of the lower ring and the bars to bear slidingly against the wall. The lower clamp ring may be in two sections with end flanges bolted together.
