Abstract

In a method of extracting a solute from a solution of it in one solvent by contacting the solution with a second solvent in which the solute is also soluble and which is immiscible or very nearly so with the first solvent, the second or extracting solvent is absorbed by beads, granules or like particles of a synthetic organic high polymer, e.g. a cross-linked polymer insoluble in all ordinary solvents such as a cross-linked polystyrene which neither solvent will dissolve, but which is swollen by the second or extracting solvent. The extracting solvent may be modified by the addition of a reagent, e.g. carboxylic acids, amines, having negligibly low solubility in the first solvent, and which renders the extracting agent specific or selective with respect to a solute or solutes present in the solution to be treated. The absorption of the extracting solvent, with or without the addition of special reagents, by the synthetic polymer which may be packed into a tower either previously or subsequently to the absorption, may be effected previously to passing the solution through the packed tower or the extracting solvent, with or without the addition of a special reagent, may be mixed with the solution which is then passed through the packed tower. Alternatively, the special reagent may be added to the solution which is then passed through the bed of the polymer containing the absorbed extracting solvent or the solution is contacted with the extracting solvent with or without special reagent added and then the polymer is added and allowed to absorb the extracting solvent, together with the extracted solute. The solution to be extracted may have a complex-forming reagent added thereto to solubilize the desired solute and may further be prepared by the addition of a buffer to adjust the pH to the optimal value for the section of a particular solute or solutes, or by the addition of a masking agent for modifying the extraction characteristics. In an example iodine is extracted from aqueous solution by passing through a column packed with beads of cross-linked polystyrene resin previously allowed to swell in carbon tetrachloride the iodine being subsequently recovered by treating the packing with potassium iodide. In another example salts of cadmium, lead and tin in decinormal hydrochloric acid solution were separated by passing through a column packed with beads of cross-linked polystyrene resin treated with a solution of 0.1 per cent "dithiol" (4-methyl-1, 2-dimercapto-benzene) in carbon tetrachloride when the cadmium came out in the effluent, the lead and tin being retained in the column, the lead being brought out on passing 2N hydrochloric acid through the column, the tin remaining in the column.
