Abstract

738,114. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and TREVASKIS, H. W. July 29, 1954 [Aug. 18, 1953], No. 22707/53. Class 103 (1). In a disc brake comprising an annular disc adapted to engage with a wheel or like member to be braked, a plurality of circumferentially-spaced friction pads on each side of the disc are adapted to frictionally engage the disc between them such that the friction pads are staggered radially across the braking surfaces of the disc to sweep substantially the entire braking surfaces of the disc in one revolution thereof. In the embodiment illustrated applied to a disc brake for aircraft, two axially spaced annular members 1 and 2 are adapted to rotate with the aircraft wheel by means of dogs 3 so that the annular members are axially slidable relative to the wheel. Braking is effected by means of a series of pads 21 which are housed in a substantially arcuate torque member 6 which is adapted to be bolted to a fixed portion of a wheel mounting and extends over about one half of the braking surface of the annular members and so shaped as to curve gradually inwards so that one end coincides with the outer periphery of the annular members 1 and 2 and the opposite end is approximately midway between the inner and outer peripheries of the annular members. Secured to the torque member 6 by bolts 10 is a further substantially arcuate member 8 of similar shape and having a radially extending portion 9 carrying fixed friction pads 24. A carrier plate 12 carrying pads of friction material 22 and 23 is located between the annular members 1 and 2 and secured to the rigid torque member but adapted for axial movement thereon. Bolted to the torque member 6 is a substantially arcuate housing 25 in which are situated fourteen fluid pressure actuated piston and cylinder units 28. In operation, when fluid pressure is applied to the pistons, the friction pads 21 are forced into frictional engagement with the annular member 1; continued movement of the pistons forcing the annular members 1 and 2 and the carrier plate 12 towards the radially extending member 9 whereby all the radially extended faces of the annuli are frictionally engaged to effect retardation thereof and of the wheel. The friction pads are restrained from rotation by means of pins 24a and the torque member 6 is provided with a support plate 6a to which an automatic braking device may be secured. Specification 676,708 is referred to.
