Abstract

737,605. Transfer paper &c. DICK CO., A. B. March 31, 1953 [May 13, 1952], No. 8950/53. Class 96. [Also in Group XVI] A method for the production of copy with a master is characterized by forming a planographic image on the master with a composition substantially free of dye colour and containing at least one of the components for reaction to form a dyestuff, wetting the surface of a copy sheet with a fluid containing a solvent for the dye-forming component, and contacting the wetted surface of the copy sheet with the imaged surface of the master to dissolve off some of the dye-forming components to the wetted surface of the copy sheet for reaction to form the dyestuff in the imaged areas of the copy sheet. The dye-forming components may comprise a diazo dye-forming component and a coupler which reacts therewith to form an azo dye. The diazo dye-forming component may be coated on a transfer sheet from which the master sheet is prepared and the coupler may be impregnated in the copy sheet or be contained in the wetting- out solution in which the dye-forming component in the master is soluble. Alternatively the coupler may be coated on the transfer sheet and the diazo dye-forming component contained in the copy sheet or in the wetting-out fluid. In a further alternative, both dye-forming components may be present in the imaged master sheet, in the presence of an acidic medium which maintains the pH value below 3.5, the components being selected so that at a pH value below 3.5, inter-reaction is impossible. An alkali solution, to increase the pH value above 3.5, is then contained in the wetting-out fluid or the alkali may be applied to the copy sheet after application of the wetting-out fluid. The diazo dye-forming component is of the general formula In an example the carbon transfer sheet is formed by coating a thin fibrous sheet with a composition of carnauba wax, oxidized microwax, polybutene, petrolatum, mineral oil, and 20-75 per cent by weight of para diazo diethyl aniline zinc chloride. The composition is melted at a temperature of 80-85‹ C. and applied on the surface of the base sheet in concentrations from 15-20 pounds/3000 sq. feet. The fluid applied to the copy sheet is composed of 0.5 per cent phloroglucinol, 5 per cent #- naphthol, 2 per cent diethanolamine and 92.5 per cent methanol. Coupling to form a permanent azo dye takes place between the para diazo diethyl aniline zinc chloride and the phloroglucinol and #-naphthol, the pH level being adjusted by the diethanolamine.
