Abstract

737,587. Vehicle wheels. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Nov. 26, 1953 [Nov. 26, 1952], No. 30001/52. Class 144 (1). A road vehicle wheel is formed with separate rim and hub portions each with radially extending flanges having circumferentially spaced radially extending recesses or projections, the flanges being mutually adjacent to leave an annular gap therebetween which is filled by a rubber or like annulus co-operating with positive means acting axially therethrough, and the recesses or projections to provide respectively, relative axial location of, and driving engagement between, the rim and hub portions. Fig. 1 shows a rim 10 and wheel disc 13 with aligned radial flanges 11b and 14 respectively each embraced by a channel-sectioned rubber ring 18, 17 the bases of which abut each other. The flanges 11b and 14 have aligned radial recesses through which extend bolts 20 clamping together securing rings 19 which embrace the two flanges and deform the rubber rings 18, 17 to fill the recesses in the flanges around the bolts 20. Fig. 4 shows an alternative arrangement wherein a channel-sectioned flange 26 is riveted to the underside of a rim 25 the rivet heads 27a forming projections on the flange base which are aligned on assembly with recesses in the edge of a bowed wheel disc flange 30. The flange 26 receives a channelsectioned rubber ring 28 which in turn receives the wheel disc flange 30, the rubber being deformed into the flange recesses on assembly. Assembly is effected by distorting the wheel disc, initially bowed as shown in chain lines, to flatten the bow.
