Abstract

<PICT:0737532/III/1> <PICT:0737532/III/2> <PICT:0737532/III/3> Sulphur is recovered from gas containing sulphur vapour and suspended particles of accompanying impurities by passing the gas through a separation zone in the form of a cylinder 1 (Fig. 1a) in which is mounted a rapidly rotating wheel 6 having a plurality of vanes 7. The gas is preferably passed into the area of action of the wheel as shown, i.e. tangentially, but it may also be passed in axially. Due to the high circumferential velocity of the wheel the impurities, in liquid or solid form, are hurled at the walls of the cylinder 1 and then drain to the collector 5. The collected impurities may be freed from sulphur by heating the collector to a temperature of 150-500 DEG C. The gas may be passed into the device at a temperature of 150-600 DEG C., in particular 300 DEG C., and the device may be maintained at a temperature of between the condensation point of sulphur and 550 DEG C. The velocity at which the gas is admitted to the device should be low in relation to the circumferential velocity of the wheel which may be 500-5000 rotations per minute. As shown in Fig. 3, sulphur-containing gas from a furnace 8 is passed to a separating device 9 (similar to device 1 of Fig. 1a), then through a cooler 10, a further separating device 11 for removing residual sulphur, a pump 13 and a gas heater 12, the residual gas being recycled to the furnace.
