Abstract
737,221. Cross-connecting arrangements for cable heads. SOC. ANON DE TELECOMMUNICATIONS. June 1, 1953 [May 30, 1952; Feb. 6, 1953], No. 15272/53. Class 40 (4). Cable heads for incoming cables and cables to a local exchange network are mounted at the front of a single compartmented rack, line transformers or simple " junction blocks," associated with the cable heads, lying in said compartments; the junction blocks being connectable by'jumpers to each other or to strips of plugs or tags at the rear of the rack, for connection either to adjacent auxiliary bays containing amplifiers, ringing equipment &c. and the line transformers being connectable to a "supervisory" head, also mounted on the front of the rack, which is used for supervision of circuits incoming to the exchange but having no other point (e.g. on the auxiliary bays) for such supervision. As shown in Fig. 4, cables are brought up to columns of sockets 46 adjacent to compartments containing the " junction blocks " or line transformer units to which they may be connected by U-links. The upper two sets of sockets 46 in a column give access to the centre points of the quads for insulation testing purposes. Spaces 51 between the compartments accommodate jumpers. On the left the pairs of the cable head 48 leading to the exchange equipment are brought out on tag strips. These may be jumpered to tag blocks on the back of the equipment, these blocks being cabled to a supervisory head 47. This " supervisory " head 47, Fig. 14, consists of sets of sockets connectable by U-links to corresponding sets 91 associated with " dummy junction units " through which tests can be made via sockets 90. The other side of the dummy junction unit is brought out on tag blocks for jumpering to line transformer units associated with the outgoing cable. If the exchange is automatic a panel 92 is provided, plugging into the strips 90, for busying or testing an exchange line. Below the supervisory head are panels 49, 50 carrying insulating testing and supervision apparatus. Figs. 17-21. illustrate diagrammatically the various types of connections which may be set up. Thus if cables incoming from different directions are wired to opposite sides of columns of the cable head 46, some through circuits may be established merely by the use of U-links 101, Fig. 17. Other through connections between cables wired to different cable heads may be established by the use of junction blocks 75, 75<SP>1</SP> connected to their respective cables over U-links 104, 1041 and interconnected by a jumper 102 connected to the sockets 77, 771, Fig. 18. For through circuits requiring amplification, circuits from the cable 103 are connected via junction blocks 75 and jumpers 105 to sockets 61 co-operating with strips of plugs 53 connected to the amplifier rack 107 and thence via a similar set of connections to the cable 108, Fig. 19. An incoming circuit requiring amplification but terminating in the exchange reaches the amplifier rack as previously described but returns via pairs connected to a tag strip 52 at the back of the frame and this is in turn jumpered to the tag strips 96 of the local exchange cable 114, Fig. 20. An incoming circuit not requiring amplification is connected to a line transformer unit 76 which in turn is jumpered to the tag strips 88 associated with the supervisory equipment. After passing through the latter the circuit passes via U-links to the supervisory head 47 which is permanently cabled to tag strips 52 which may then be jumpered to the tag strips 96 of the local exchange cable 114, Fig. 21. Specification 677,854 is referred to.
