Abstract
A filter for use in the melt-spinning of synthetic linear polymers comprises a plurality of metal plates adjacent to one another and arranged in succession with respect to the general flow of the molten polymer, the surfaces of the <PICT:0735788/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0735788/IV (a)/2> plates having recesses therein to define narrow channels between contacting plates, the plates being further provided with through passages communicating with the recesses, and means for assembling the plates in juxtaposed contacting relationship, wherein the passages connect the narrow channels in staggered relationship to define a plurality of staggered paths of flow for the molten polymer. As shown in Fig. 1, each plate 14 is provided with a series of concentric circular grooves 16 of semi-circular cross-section on each face. Corresponding grooves on opposite faces are connected by equidistant bores 15 having a diameter of from 0.2 to 0.5 mm. and a length of from 5 to 7 mm. The plates are juxtaposed in a casing 10 with the bores 15 of adjacent plates misaligned so that a melt of synthetic linear polymer must pass through bores 15 and along capillaries 17, formed by the juxtaposed grooves 16, alternately in passing from a conduit 18 to a spinneret (not shown). The diameters of the bores 15 and of the grooves 17 may decrease progressively from the conduit to the spinnerets. As shown in Fig. 4, plates 20 are each provided with a central bore 22 and radial grooves 23 in the lower face only; they alternate with plates 21 of less diameter each provided with radial grooves 26 in the lower face only, the grooves communicating with a central depression of the same depth. Peripheral vanes (not shown) are provided on the edge of each plate 21 to centre it in the casing 25. Flow is from a conduit 28 through bore 22 of the first plate 20, along grooves 23 in its lower face to an annular space 27, along grooves 26 in the lower face of the first plate 21, and into the central bore 22 of the second plate 20, and so on. The cross-sections of the channels formed by the juxtaposition of grooves 23 or 26 with the ungrooved faces are of the same order as those in Fig. 1 and may similarly decrease towards the spinneret. The material of the plates may be (stainless) nickel-chrome steel to resist corrosion by washing-agents such as nitric acid. Perforate screens may be combined with or alternated with the plates or may be located p before or after them.
