Abstract
735,493. Snap-action spring mechanisms. ROBERTSHAW-FULTON CONTROLS CO. July 17, 1953, No. 19908/53. Class 108 (3). [Also in Group XXXVII] A snap-action device comprises a dished circular disc A having a pair of parallel slots 10, 10 positioned one on either side of the centre of the disc, and a transverse slot 14 connecting the slots 10, 10. The slots 10, 10 and 14 define a pair of oppositely disposed spring arms 16, 16 which extend in planes tangential to the surface of the disc A. The angle between the slot 14 and the slots 10, 10 is preferably between 30-45 degrees. The disc A is formed from dies of uniform spherical radius, but the slots 10, 10 and the slot 14, tend to produce distortion in the disc. This results in the formation of opposed sectors (shown shaded) in which given points (e.g. X, X) are of greater disc height than points of equal radii (e.g. Y, Y) in the remaining (unshaded) sectors. As applied to a valve mechanism, one side of the disc A is contacted by a peripherally-disposed knife edge 20 of a thrust element 18. The other side of the disc A engages a ring 26. A valve stem 28 seats on the arms 16. The device may also be used for operating switches.
