Abstract

735,267. Electric furnace. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Aug. 10, 1953 [Aug. 14, 1952], No. 22070/53. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group XXII] A metal casting apparatus comprises at each pouring station a ladle 20 supported on a cradle 60 mounted on a carriage 31 and tiltable about a transverse axis coinciding with the pouring lip of the ladle by motor-driven screws 65 engaging nut members 74. On the lower part of the cradle is mounted a rotary inductive device 80 which stirs the metal in the ladle. A shaft 93 carries a bracket 95 which supports a core 94 for the ladle and also pillars 97 which carry slides 98 carrying electrodes 100 which maintain the metal in the ladle at a high temperature. The electrodes are vertically movable by winches driven by motors 104 so that to permit replacement of a ladle the electrodes may be lifted and the lids swung to one side about shaft 93. Each ladle has a bottom wall comprising spaced parallel bars 125 of non-magnetic material and a lower side wall section 121 of preferably non-magnetic material. A conduit 135 through which cooling fluid is circulated acts as a slag dam. The sloping walls 128 and the angle of the electrodes are such that the ends of the electrodes remain adjacent the surface of the melt even when the ladle is tilted.
