Abstract
Fluorescent brightening agents for coloured or uncoloured fibrous materials comprise bisazoles of the formula <FORM:0734981/IV (c)/1> where R is a benzene residue, Y is O or S and m is 1, 2 or 3. In an example undyed cotton yarn is treated with a solution of the sodium salt of sulphonated 1 : 2 - di - (51 - phenyloxazolyl - 21)-ethylene.ALSO:The invention comprises bis-azoles of the formula <FORM:0734981/IV (b)/1> where R is a benzene residue, Y is O or S and m is 1, 2 or 3. They are made by condensing amino-ketones R-COCH2NH2 with fumaric acid or a functional derivative thereof (e.g. halide), ring-closing the resulting acylaminoketones (alone or with phosphorus sulphide) to the bis-azoles and finally sulphonating. The products are fluorescent brightening agents. An example shows the production of fumaroylbis - (o - aminoacetophenone) and ring-closure with sulphuric acid to 1 : 2-di-(51-phenyloxazolyl-21)-ethylene. Sulphonation may occur simultaneously with ring-closure or a separate step may be necessary.ALSO:Fluorescent brightening agents for soaps and other detergents comprise bis-azoles of the formula <FORM:0734981/III/1> where R is a benzene residue, Y is O or S and m is 1, 2 or 3.
