Abstract
An air-drying wrinkle-finish coating composition is made by heating together a synthetic resin or a natural resin (see Group III), with at least 1 1/2 times its weight of a conjugated vegetable oil at 175-280 DEG C. till a thread of 6 to 10 inches can be drawn from a drop of the cooled cooked material, characterized in that the vegetable oil is (a) Kamala oil from the seeds of Mallotus phillipinensis Muel Arg.; (b) Trichosanthes anguine (chachinda) seed oil or (c) Momordica chrantial (karela) seed oil. Up to 80 per cent of these oils may be replaced by other oils, e.g. blown, boiled or isomerized linseed, tobacco seed or safflower seed oils; or soyabean, fish or dehydrated castor oils. Dyes or pigments may be added. Lustre finishes are obtained by incorporating aluminium, nickel or silver powder. The coating compositions are dilutable with benzene or toluene and may contain a cobalt drier. In examples: (1) Ester gum was heated with Kamala seed oil at 200-250 DEG C. After cooling, benzene and cobalt linoleate were added. Lead chromate or aluminium, copper or bronze powder may be added. (2) Ester gum and isomerized tobacco seed oil were heated to 230-250 DEG C., the mixture cooled to 200 DEG C., Kamala seed oil added and the mixture cooled. The material was diluted with benzene containing cobalt linoleate. Titanium dioxide or carbon black may be added. (3) Ester gum and Kamala seed oil were heated to 200-225 DEG C. in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Titanium dioxide may be added.ALSO:An air-drying wrinkle-finish coating composition is made by heating together a natural resin (e.g. copal or kauri gum) or a synthetic resin (see Group IV (a)) with at least 1 1/2 times its weight of a conjugated vegetable oil at 175-280 DEG C. till a thread of 6 to 10 inches can be drawn from a thread of the cooled material, characterized in that the vegetable oil is (a) Kamala seed oil from the seeds of Mallotus phillipinensis Muel Arg.; (b) Trichosanthes anguine seed oil or (c) Momordica Chrantia (karela) seed oil. Up to 80 per cent of these oils may be replaced by p other oils, e.g. blown, boiled or isomerized linseed, tobacco seed or safflower seed oils; or soyabean, fish or dehydrated castor oils. Dyes or pigments, e.g. copper, bronze, aluminium, nickel or silver powder or lead chromate may be added. The coating compositions are dilutable with benzene or toluene and may contain a cobalt drier. When coating absorbent surfaces, the surface is preferably given an undercoat, e.g. with water glass, glue, gelatine or ester gum varnishes. In examples (see Group IV (a)) paints are prepared from ester gum and Kamala seed oil.
