Abstract

734,432. Turning gear. UHER, E. Jan 8, 1953 [July 17, 1952]. No. 600/53. Class 7(5). [Also in Group XXIV] A cone friction clutch between a flywheel 2 and a shaft 1, comprising bearings 3 supporting the flywheel on the shaft, the flywheel having a cone-shaped friction surface 4 and a hub 8 on the shaft carrying a disc 5 with a conical rim, &c., 6 to engage the flywheel, is characterized by an elastic dish-shaped spider 12 between the disc and hub tending to engage the conically rimmed disc with the flywheel and by an additional dish-shaped spring 23 also mounted on the hub, means 20, 21, &c., being provided to disengage the clutch. The clutch disengaging means consists of a non-rotating ring 13, Fig. 3, having a hole 19 receiving a roller 20 also received in a hole 19 in a ring 16 which, when rotated by hand operation of a lever 21, is caused to move axially to the position shown and thus engage the edge of the conical rim 6, moving it axially against the force of the springs 12, 23 to disengage the clutch. As shown, the device is applied as an inertia starter for an internal combustion engine, the stator 28 of an electric motor being secured to a stationary part 15 of the engine casing and the rotor 26 to the flywheel 2.
