Abstract
<PICT:0734150/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0734150/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0734150/IV (a)/3> In apparatus for the treatment of fibres, e.g. viscose rayon, with a number of different liquids and comprising a pair of inclined rollers over which the thread passes in a substantially helical path, one roller comprises a plurality of separate cylinders mounted on a common shaft and provided with means whereby the cylinders may be brought together during the lacing-up operation to form a single continuous surface and whereby the cylinders may be subsequently spaced apart along the common shaft to permit each cylinder to receive a respective treatment liquid without danger of contamination by liquid applied to the adjacent cylinders. As shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus comprises an upper roller 5 supported at one end and a lower roller comprising a plurality of separate cylinders 6a . . . 6f mounted upon a hollow shaft 4 supported at both ends. A bar 10 may be moved axially within the shaft 4 by operation of a handwheel 8. The cylinders 6a . . . 6f are mounted upon separate sleeves 12 upon the shaft 4 and are urged to make contact with one another by means of the springs 11 mounted between the sleeves 12 and stops 16. Upon rotating the handwheel 8, the rod 10 moves to the left, carrying with it a plurality of studs 13 passing through slots 14 in the shaft 4 and engaging within slots 15 in the sleeves 12. Successive slots 15 along the lower roller increase in length from a left-to-right direction so that the left-hand stud 13 engages its corresponding sleeve 12 first and moves that to the left before the next stud engages the succeeding sleeve 12 and so on. The lacing-up of a thread is carried out from right to left with the cylinders brought together, the thread being assisted manually past the small projections 19 on the cylinders. The hand-wheel is then rotated to separate the cylinders and the trough 25 is brought to the position shown in Fig. 2. The projections 19 prevent the thread from slipping into the spaces between the cylinders. The treatment liquors are supplied from tubes 27 and flexible protecting surfaces 17 are arranged between the cylinders to prevent liquid from getting inside the lower roller. Fig. 7 illustrates a modification in which thread guides 121 are provided for carrying the thread from one cylinder to the next. The guides are mounted on a rotatable hollow shaft 119 so that they may be moved from a position in which they do not engage the threads to one where they do. The shaft 119 is of construction similar to that of the lower roller so that on rotation of the hand-wheel 8 the guides move together with the cylinders 6a . . . 6f. In this arrangement the projections 19 on the cylinders need not be provided. The edges of the cylinders may be toothed so that in the closed position they interdigitate with one another.
