An accumulator 1, Fig. 1, having a controlled outlet (not shown) for dispensing high pressure liquid, e.g. water for car washing &c., is alternately supplied from containers 2 with liquid under gaseous pressure, e.g. compressed air, controlled by a valve 13, having a connection 12 to a compressed air supply, connections 35a to the atmosphere and a connection 36a to each container. The valve 13 slidably mounts a piston valve member 17, Fig. 5, movable into either of two end positions by compressed air supplied through pilot pipe 37, one connected to each container. On the level of the liquid in a container 2 falling sufficiently a float-actuated needle valve 40 opens to allow some of the compressed air, which has entered that container to act on the associated end of the valve member 17 to move it to its other end position so as to exhaust the air from the container and open the other container to the compressed air supply and so transfer the water in that container to the accumulator. Initially the containers 2 are filled, and the accumulator 1, partially filled with water from a common supply pipe through pipes 5 and non-return valves 9, the air in the containers being exhausted to the atmosphere by manual manipulation of the valve member 17 by the insertion of a tool through the disconnected compressed air connection 12. Air in the accumulator 1 is trapped to form an air cushion. The connection 12 is then connected to the compressed air supply with the valve member 17 in one of its end positions whence the apparatus operates as explained above until the supply of compressed air is cut off. A spring-loaded plunger 30 engages latter in its end positions.
