Abstract
733,905. Flowmeters. KROMSCHRODER AKT.-GES., G. July 9, 1953 [July 14, 1952], No. 19076/53. Class 69 (1). In a liquid or gas flow meter of the cone and float type, several floats of different size and/or weight are so arranged that a different float is operative over each of various ranges of measurement. In one form Fig. 1, a main tapered transparent metering tube 1 is fitted with a float 2 which itself is transparent and tapered and forms a metering tube for a float 4. Both tubes 1, 2 are calibrated and the tube 2 has an external flange 5 which abuts a sealing-ring 3 in the lower part of the tube 1. A small rate of flow through the meter merely raises the float 4 in the tube 2 to a position indicating the rate of flow, whilst a greater rate of flow raises the float 4 until it closes the aperture in the top of the tube 2 and thereafter raises the float 2 in the tube 1 to a position indicating the rate of flow. A central guide-rod for the floats may be fitted. In another form, Fig. 3, the transparent tube 1 is cylindrical and contains a body 10 having a cylindrical inner surface and an upwardly tapered outer surface. An upwardly tapered guide-rod 8 having a circular cap 9 is arranged within the body 10. Ring-shaped floats 11, 12 are arranged surrounding the rod 8 and body 10 respectively. The method of operation is similar to that described above, the float 11 indicates low, and float 12 high, rates of flow. A further form similar to that shown in Fig. 3 is described but the inner surface of the body 10 is tapered downwardly and the rod 8 and float 11 are replaced by a simple float operating in the central tapered space of the body 10.
