Abstract
733,162. Linear-dimension gauges. TUCKER, C. L. W. April 1, 1953 [April 1, 1952], No. 8270/52. Class 106 (2). An adjustable gauge piece comprises a tapered, central body portion 2, 3 arranged between two wedge-shaped members 1 and 4, as shown in Fig. 1. Two threaded spindles 8a enable the wedges to be moved simultaneously in the same direction relatively to the central body 2, 3 so as to increase or decrease the perpendicular distance between the working faces 1a and 4a of the wedges 1 and 4. The spindles 8a are held against axial movement by their end bearings 5, 7 secured by screws 5a to the central body 2, 3. A nut 6 on each of the threaded spindles 8a is secured by screws 6a to its corresponding wedge member. A gear 12 on each spindle 8a may mesh with a central gear 10 rotatable on a shaft 9 projecting from the central body 2, 3. An actuating knob 14 for the gauge is held in position by a nut 20 on a stem 10a of the gear 10. The stem 10a also carries a micrometer head 13, Fig. 3; in frictional engagement therewith, arranged to co-operate with a fixed zero point on the central body portion 2, 3. The micrometer head can be rotated against the action of a spring friction washer 21 to set the zero reading of the gauge at any desired adjustment of the gauge. Modifications. According to one modification the bevel gears 12 are in direct mesh with each other, one spindle 8a carrying the actuating knob and also the friction-loaded zero setting device. According to a further modification, not shown, an actuating knob may comprise a knurled member arranged at an intermediate point along a spindle 8a and projecting from an accommodating recess provided in the abutting sides of one of the wedge members 1 or 4 and the central body portion 2, 3.
