Gyroscopic apparatus of the kind comprising a rotor mounted for spinning about a first axis that intersects a second axis, about which a rotor-driving shaft is mounted for spinning in a support, at a pivot point on the second axis about which point the rotor, when spinning about the first axis, is free to pivot through a limited angle in any plane through the first axis from a position in which the two axes are in line, is characterized in that the support in which the second spin axis is located is supported in a universal mounting comprising a gimbal ring in which the support is pivoted for rotation about a first gimbal axis perpendicular to the second spin axis and which is itself pivoted for rotation about a second gimbal axis perpendicular to the second spin axis and which is itself pivoted for rotation about a second gimbal axis perpendicular to the first gimbal axis and the second spin axis and in which the driving shaft has an appreciable mass so as to constitute the rotor of a second gyroscope. The apparatus described is identical with that described in Specification 732,975. Specification 719,957 also is referred to.
