Abstract
Sulphur-vulcanizable rubbery hydrocarbon polymerisates derived from conjugated dienes are vulcanized by heating in the presence of partially dechlorinated hexachlorocyclopentadiene having a chlorine content of 60-75 per cent preferably in an amount of 1 to 200 per cent. Sulphur and metal oxide activators need not be present, but zinc oxide, magnesia and litharge in an amount of 0.5 to 20 per cent on the rubber, or 2-mercaptobenzthiazole may be used to accelerate the action. Carbon black may also be added. The dechlorinated hexachlorocyclopentadiene may be made according to the method described in Group IV (b). The conjugated diene rubber may be polybutadiene, a butadiene-styrene copolymer, or a butadiene-para-methyl-styrene copolymer.ALSO:Partially dechlorinated hexachlorocyclopentadiene melting at 123-124 DEG C. and having the approximate composition C10Cl10 may be obtained by slowly adding copper powder to a mixture of hexachlorocyclopentadiene and toluene under reflux, cooling, filtering, removing excess hexachlorocyclopentadiene and toluene by steam distillation and then dissolving the residue in dioxan and precipitating by means of methanol. The product may be used as a vulcanizing agent for natural and synthetic rubber as described in Groups IV (a) and V.ALSO:Sulphur-vulcanizable rubbery hydrocarbon polymerizates derived from conjugated dienes including natural rubber are vulcanized by heating in the presence of partially dechlorinated hexachloro-cyclopentadiene having a chlorine content of 60-75 per cent preferably in an amount of 1-200 per cent for a time sufficient to vulcanize the polymerizate. Sulphur and metal oxide activators need not be present, but zinc oxide, magnesia, and litharge in an amount of 0.5-20 per cent on the rubber, or 2-mercaptobenzthiazole may be used to accelerate the action. Carbon black may also be added. The dechlorinated hexachlorocyclopentadiene may be made according to the method described in Group IV(b).
