Abstract
A polymerizable composition comprises (1) dipropylene glycol maleate of molecular weight 2000 to 4000; (2) propylene glycol adipate molecular weight 8000 to 10,000; and (3) sufficient styrene, usually 30 to 60 per cent, to form a solution. A minor amount, e.g. from 5 to 15 per cent based on (2), of a vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymer is preferably included. The dipropylene glycol used in the manufacture of (1) may be replaced by up to about 10 per cent of tetrafurfuryl alcohol as chain stopper and quinone may be included in the resins as inhibitor. A filler, e.g. from 10 to to 35 per cent of finely-divided mica, or pigments such as lamp black, light chrome yellow and titanium dioxide may also be included. When cured, e.g. with t-butyl perbenzoate, products are obtained which have good electrical resistance at high humidity and over a wide temperature range and are thus suitable for encapsulating electrical coils such as those of transformers (see Group XXXV).
