Abstract

732,706. Centrifugal machines. DUNCAN, A. F. March 10, 1953 [March 13, 1952], No. 6539/53. Class 23. [Also in Groups XXIV and XXVI] A rotary mass is supported by one or more float or displacement members in a fluid contained within a balanced rotary vessel, the arrangement being such that movement of the mass due to lack of balance is compensated by displacement of fluid so that the rotating system remains in dynamic balance. In Fig. 1 the drum 3 of a hydro-extractor has an annular float 4. The drum and float are positioned in a balanced rotary casing 2 containing fluid 5, springs 8 forming a driving connection between the drum and casing. In the butyrometer shown in Fig. 4 the tube holders 7 are attached to a float 4 positioned in the fluid containing casing 2. As shown in Fig. 7, a rotor 3 has two floats 4 within fluid-containing casings 2, fluidproof bellows 6 being provided to prevent loss of fluid. The driving connection between the out-of-balance mass and the fluid container may be a mechanical, magnetic or hydraulic linkage. The invention may be applied to centrifuges, hydro-extractors, turbines, jetpropulsion engines, and shafts.
