Abstract

732,696. Making hinges. ESSER, P., [trading as MEYER, ROTH & PASTOR]. Dec. 29, 1952 [Dec. 29, 1951], No. 32903/52. Classes 83 (2), 83 (3) and 83 (4). A machine for manufacturing two kinds of hinge halves from punched blanks is characterized in that the drive of the machine is effected through a main shaft set transversely to a conveyer for feeding complementary pairs of hinge blanks, said shaft driving two further shafts journalled one on each side of the machine table, the two shafts being parallel to one another and to the conveyer and in that one of the shafts drives the tools for making one of the pair of hinge halves and the other shaft the tools for making the complementary hinge half, both drives being through positive mechanism with the interposition of only one transmission-gear for each tool such as a crank drive, a cam drive, a slide drive incorporating a grooved cam, or a rack-andpinion drive. Punched-out half-hinge blanks 1 carried in an auxiliary magazine are supplied in piled arrangement through a fixed double magazine (not shown). The conveyer for the blanks consists of two rails 2 reciprocated by a common eccentric-rod 3 on the main shaft. In a groove in each rail six spring-loaded feed fingers 4 are pivoted so that during backward movement of the rails the fingers swing downwards and slide past the blanks and on reversal of the rails the fingers lift so that their lugs 6 ,engage the blanks and feed them in pairs from one working position to the next for each stroke of the conveyer mechanism. The blanks are clamped during the rearward movement of the rails by a plate 8, Fig. 4, held down by springs 7 and lifted through bolts 9 by an adjustable lever 10 operated by an ecoentrio of one of the side shafts 21. Bending.-A preliminary bending of the notched edges of the blanks is effected prior to forming the knuckles. The blanks are clamped over a die 12 and a ram, carrying dies 13, is operated by a lever arm 14 from an eccentric on one of the side shafts 21 to impart the desired preliminary rounding to the notched edges. At the next working position the bending of the notched edges is completed to form the knuckles by bending tools 15, Fig. 4, adjustably mounted on slides 16 operated by eccentrics on the shafts 21. Milling.-The irregularities and broadening of the hinge knuckles produced during the bending are removed by milling cutters 19 on arbors 18 mounted on slides 17 and driven by roller-chains 20 from the shafts 21. The slides are reciprocated by eccentrics on the shafts 21. The shafts 21 drive double chainwheels 22 carried by the shafts 23 of two kneejoints. The limbs of the knee-joints are formed as casings 24, 26, to enclose the roller chains which drive the milling cutters. The depth of milling is adjusted by varying the position of a slide 27 bolted to the milling-slide 17. Counter-sinking.-After milling, the blanks are fed beneath a multispindle drilling head 30, Figs. 8 and 9. Each spindle 31 carries a vertically-adjustable counter-sinking cutter 32. The head 30 is carried by slide 29 actuated by an arm 33 eccentrically mounted on one of the shafts 21, said arm being linked to a disc 35 rotatable on a shaft 34. The disc can, by a hand-wheel 36, be clamped against a friction disc 37 keyed to the shaft 34 which is oscillated by the eccentric arm 33, and a toothed wheel 38 on the shaft 34 transmits the motion to a rack 39 attached to the slide 29 and reciprocates the head. The depth of counter-sinking can be adjusted by varying the position of the disc 35 relatively to the friction disc 37. A hand-wheel 40 also keyed to the shaft 34, enables the slide 29, after releasing the disc 35, to be rapidly lifted for changing the cutters. After the counter-sinking, the finished hinge halves are pushed out of the machine by the succeeding halves entering the counter-sinking position.
