Abstract
A polyepoxy compound or compounds having an average number of epoxy groups per molecule greater than 1.0 and consisting of a glycidyl ether of a polyhydric alcohol or a polymer of a 2-alkenyl glycidyl ether, or a mixture of a glycidyl ether of a polyhydric alcohol and a polymer of a 2-alkenyl glycidyl ether, is dispersed in a textile material, which is then subjected to an elevated temperature in the presence of a hardening agent to harden the compound. The polyepoxy compound may be saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic, and may be substituted with non-interfering substituents such as hydroxyl groups. There may be an average of more than 1.5 epoxy groups per molecule. The compound may be a polymer of allyl glycidyl ether having a molecular weight between 300 and 1,000 and an average number of epoxy groups per molecule of up to 6.0, or a condensation product of one or more polyhydric alcohols with dichlor-, epichlor-, dibromo- or epibromohydrin. The polyhydric alcohol may have from 2 to 10 carbon atoms and from 2 to 6 hydroxyl groups, ethylene glycol and glycerol being specified. The hardening agent may be p-toluenesulphonic acid, phosphoric, boric, perchloric or persulphuric acid, a p-cresole or urea-boron-trifluoride complex, triethylamine, ethylene diamine, or mono- or poly-carboxylic acids or their anhydrides containing from 2 to 12 carbon atoms such as citric, acetic or phthalic acid or anhydride. The amount of compound taken up by the material may vary from 3 to 50 per cent by weight of the material, which may be yarn or woven, knitted or netted fabrics of cotton, linen, silk, jute, rayon, wool or mixtures thereof. The compound may be applied as aqueous or organic solution or dispersion. A solution in an aqueous lower aliphatic alcohol may be employed, or the less soluble compounds may be emulsified in water with an emulsifying agent which is free from nitrogen or strong acid groups. The hardening agent may be added to the impregnating liquid or sprayed upon the impregnated material. The impregnating liquid may comprise also a plasticizer or textile softening agent of the cationic type. The liquid may be applied by dipping or by padding rollers or by spraying or spreading devices and may be applied locally by printing rollers or stencils, or it may be applied to the cotton back of a compound fabric comprising artificial or natural silk and a cotton back. The impregnated material may be dried at 50-80 DEG C. prior to hardening treatment at 50-150 DEG C. Specifications 675,168, 675,180, 681,001 and 681,991, [all in Group IV (a)] are referred to.
