Abstract
Aggregates are prepared by mixing comminuted silicon carbide, a substantially salt-free silica sol, and a finely divided ceramic raw material which is reactable with the sol to form a ceramic matrix, drying and firing. Suitable sols are described in Specifications 645,703, 649,897 and 662,423, [all in Group III]. Suitable ceramics are refractory oxides, e.g. alumina, zirconia; refractory silicates; high pyrometric cone clays; or mixtures of such clays with an alkali metal silicate. A gelation accelerator, e.g. magnesia or ammonium chloride, in small amount can be used to speed setting of the mix. Hardness of the aggregates, which may be used as refractories or for grinding wheels, depends on the grain size of the silicon carbide.
