731,965. Regulating liquid levels. LOVETT C. A. March 1, 1954 [Dec. 3, 1952], No. 30599/52. Class 123 (1). A device for maintaining a constant liquid level in a tank, for example in the expansion tank 10 of a water heating system, consists of a float 18 having secured to its top surface a right-angled pipe 17 one limb of which is connected by a flexible tube 16, for example of polyvinyl chloride, to a supply pipe 15 by means of which the expansion tank is connected to a main storage tank 13 whilst the other upwardly extending limb is open-ended and communicates with a downwardly curving branch pipe 17a. An outlet pipe 11 connects tank 10 to the heating system and overflow pipes 12, 14 are provided in tanks 10, 13 respectively. Whilst the level in tank 10 is normal the junction of pipes 17 and 17a is at the level 19 of the water in tank 13. If the level in tank 10 falls, for example because of evaporation, the junction falls below level 19 and water flows from tank 13 into tank 10 until the normal level therein is restored.
